Engaging Families in Creativity: Year 7 Open Art Lessons at Looe
On 26 September 2024, The Art Department at Looe invited Year 7 parents to join their children in an art lesson, and we were thrilled to welcome 36 parents who participated in a key skills lesson. This session focused on developing tonal range and using tone to create the illusion of form, while also exploring elements like lighting, shadow, composition, and shape.
Miss Welch led the lesson in a way that mirrored a typical school day, allowing parents to experience the learning environment and support their child's transition into the school. This initiative, which Miss Welch has successfully implemented at other schools, is a new venture for Looe. The Art Department believes that opening up lessons for parents can encourage conversations about a lifelong love of learning.
The department plans to continue this initiative by hosting a series of ‘open lessons’ in the arts, with the possibility of expanding it to other subjects in the future. Feedback from attending parents has been extremely positive, with many offering suggestions for further development. One student remarked, “I was really impressed my Mum was so well-behaved!”
Each lesson will be featured on the school website, and Miss Wood and Miss Welch will share their experiences at The Smart Schools Conference in February.
