Students follow the Key Stage 3 National Framework in ICT. This ensures all students can use ICT securely, creatively, independently and confidently enough to keep their skills up-to-date and able to generalise from their experiences to extend their knowledge, skills and understanding of ICT.

Students follow the National framework for ICT at Key stage 3.
This means that they are expected to use a range of ICT tools and strategies to find and organise information. They must also be able to use the information and data in purposeful and challenging ways, making the most of the features and capabilities of technology. They are expected to become increasingly independent in the kind of work that they do and the methods that they use, eventually developing sophisticated strategies to handle processes and instructions. They are developing communication skills to allow them to express their findings and concepts through a range of digital formats and technologies whilst taking account of the type of person/people they are communicating with. Their use of ICT technologies should become increasingly effective and they will need to ensure that they consider the opportunities available whilst remaining aware of the potential risks.
OCR Nationals ICT Level 2
The OCR National Level 2 qualification in ICT has been developed to recognise candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding of Information and Communication Technology functions, environments and operations. They have been designed to accredit candidates’ achievements in a modern and practical way that is relevant to the workplace. They do not certificate competence on the job but are work-related qualifications which will support progression to an NVQ once a candidate is in the workplace. There are no examinations; assessment is by submission of portfolios.
The course has 4 possible attainments:
First Award Unit 1 plus Unit 20 or 21: equivalent to 1 GCSE at grades A*-C
Award Unit 1 plus Units 2, 20 and 21: equivalent to 2 GCSE at grades A*-C
First Certificate Unit 1 plus Units 2, 20 or 21 and 2 other full Units: equivalent to 3 GCSE at grades A*-C
Certificate Unit 1 plus Units 2, 20 and 21 and 3 other full Units: equivalent to 4 GCSE at grades A*-C
The OCR National First Award/Award in ICT recognises students developing skill in using Information Technology in a practical way that reflects how it is used in the workplace. Students carry out at least 3 units in order to achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction qualification that is equivalent to 1 GCSE at Grades A-C. They will then carry out additional units to increase the value of their qualification to the equivalent of 2-4 GCSE grades according to time and ability. One unit is mandatory and looks at ICT usage in business and covers standard business applications. Students submit evidence of working with spreadsheets, word processors and databases. They also have to be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate using appropriate conventions, formats and terminology. Additional units may then cover designing for the internet and working with computer graphics. Another unit looks at innovation in ICT and e-commerce. Students are also made aware of legal and safety issues when using ICT systems throughout the course. All assessment is through submission of evidence towards the assessment criteria for each unit. There is no examination.
